Summer Tours 2018!

From Starsmore to the Mining Museum and from historic commercial districts of Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City to Chico Basin Ranch (on a Saturday!), the HPA is thrilled to present a diverse line up of fascinating historic places throughout the Pikes Peak region this summer.  Comfortable walking shoes, layers, rain gear and cameras are always recommended.  (A small flashlight is even recommended for later evening tours.)

TOUR #7

August 16 at 6:30 PM – Old Colorado City Museum and Walking Tour

Address/ Parking:  1 South 24th Street, Colorado Springs CO 80904.  Park on city streets nearby.

At 6:30 Leo Knudson, Board Member and local historian, will share some of his extensive insight into the colorful history of Old Colorado City. The little community was founded in 1859. The early residents gathered together to provide the newly arriving mountaineers and settlers with the supplies and services required by ambitious, social, and politically astute citizens.  The Old Colorado City (OCC) Historical Society’s museum, located in the original First Baptist Church, is listed on The National Register of Historic Places.  The wood framed structure was dedicated on November 21, 1890.

Following Mr. Knudson’s introduction, members of the OCC Historical Society will conduct small group guided tours through the center of this historic town.  We will find the 1859 Doctor’s cabin, the 1904 Carnegie Public Library and the 1901 cultural center known as the Waycott Opera House and Idle Hour Theatre (featured vaudeville performances).  The city streets hold stories of many generations of proud citizens going about their daily lives, stopping at the post office, bank, city hall/ fire house, and school.  Of course, there were commercial buildings that served the wide-ranging needs of daily life. We will hear about the richness and struggle of citizens living in this thriving community.  We may also hear the colorful stories of the tunnels that ran under the street.  What was that about?
