2nd ANNUAL PIKES PEAK PRESERVATION FORUM PROGRAM ANNOUNCED – CELEBRATES NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH

The Historic Preservation Alliance of Colorado Springs announces the 2nd Annual Pikes Peak Preservation Forum, Friday, May 3, 2019 at Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon in Colorado Springs.  Advance registration required – online registration open now.

This informative educational and networking conference celebrates National Preservation Month and the 20th anniversary of the nonprofit Historic Preservation Alliance.  The one-day event focuses on a wide variety of historic preservation and neighborhood revitalization topics, featuring five educational sessions, four walking tours, three workshops, a morning plenary kick off and a special luncheon presentation.  Everyone interested in historic places and vital neighborhoods is invited to attend.

Mayor John Suthers will join Rev. Williamson in the welcoming remarks and Senior City Planner, Daniel Sexton, will provide an update on the City’s Historic Preservation Master Plan, in progress.  Speakers include respected leaders in the preservation field including Annie Levinsky, Executive Director of Historic Denver; preservation professionals Erica Duvic, Amy Unger, Erika Schmelzer and Joe Saldibar all from History Colorado; Eric Metzger, Executive Director of the McAllister House Museum; Sarah Rogers, Curator, Penrose Heritage Museum; Architect Gregory Friesen from CSNA Architects; Kimber Janney from Kiva Construction; wood worker and historic window specialist, Tim Boddington and more.

Following the lively morning plenary presentation, concurrent sessions comprise the remainder of the day.  Educational sessions include must-know fundamentals and best-practices in historic preservation.  A panel of savvy local leaders working at the grassroots level in their neighborhoods will offer fresh insights and diverse experiences.  Also included is an in-depth Certified Local Government training track for Historic Preservation Commission and Board members throughout Colorado.

The workshop track is designed for interaction and learning, from how to conduct your own building condition assessment to wood window restoration techniques.  New this year is ‘My Old House” – a preservation trades open house where skilled tradespeople with experience in historic buildings will be on hand to meet one-on-one with property owners seeking guidance on maintenance and restoration challenges. Bring your project photos and drawings!

Walking tours feature the historical, architectural and decorative details of the National Register Grace and St. Stephens Church and Parish House, one of Colorado Springs’ landmark historic churches.  A bonus walking tour of the Near North End historic neighborhood, conducted by local historian Tim Scanlon, rounds out the day.  We conclude this fun conference with “Cake and Conversation” to celebrate the HPA’s 20th Anniversary and close out the “My Old House” preservation trades session.

Conference check-in begins at 8:00 a.m.  Forum concludes at 5:00 p.m. with a cash bar networking reception across the street at Paninis – or join the guided walking tour of the historic Near North End neighborhood.  Nearby on-street parking is readily available within easy (flat) walking distance to the church.  The building is wheelchair accessible including the second floor, via elevator.  This is a casual, comfy event and walking footwear is advised.  Advance registration is required at www.hpasprings.org – deadline is April 29th.  $35 for HPA members; $55 for new members which includes a one-year individual HPA membership; $10 for Historic Preservation Commission and Board members.  A delightful lunch is included and a surprise student presentation is in the works.
