In his presentation, “More Than Simply a Garden; The Significance of Early Horticulture on the McAllister’s North Cascade Grounds,” Mr. Metzger will show how the McAllister’s experimental garden functioned as an example to others about what could be grown on the high plains of Southern Colorado and how they might participate in the local economy. The experimental garden, and the architecture of the house, served as a demonstration of the McAllister family’s permanence and authority, and helped to grow the nascent community into an attractive and economically healthy Colorado town.
