Sue Neufeld and church volunteers will provide us with the history of the church which was completed and dedicated in 1893 (reportedly one of the first Unitarian churches built west of the Mississippi River). Our group will assemble outside for the architecture/garden segment of the tour and then proceed indoors to the sanctuary for a slide show presentation followed by rotating smaller group tours of the interior spaces.

The church is notable for its distinctive Shingle architectural style – the only example of a Shingle style church in Colorado Springs. The original exposed wooden beams, sliding doors between the two halls and wooden arches delineate the chancel and choir loft. The church also features fifty-six original stained glass windows.

In 1976 the Great Hall was remodeled; and in 1984–85 Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, Frank Lloyd Wright’s granddaughter, designed an upper story over the basement addition. All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church was officially listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in 2007.

HPA Coordinator: Cathy & Skip Mundy

Tour Guide: Sue Neufeld, ASUUC member and HPA member, has been a Colorado Springs resident for 36 years and loves local history. This is her third HPA summer tour – the first being the “History of the Fine Arts Center” while she was still a 10-year docent. She also did an earlier HPA summer tour of All Souls. She has been a nurse, medical researcher, elementary school teacher, and for 23 years an academic librarian. She was Head of the Reference Department at USAFA’s Cadet Library for 19 years. She has been retired 17 years, but still remains very active in the community. Sue attended All Souls from 1988 for 5 years, including the celebration of the ASUUC Centennial. She and two others researched and prepared their “100 Year History,” so this presentation is an update of that endeavor. She is again a member of the church, rejoining in 2023.

Waiver: All attendees must sign the updated 2024 HPA Liability Waiver. DOWNLOAD HERE and bring with you or sign at the venue.

Parking: Park in back of the church and on surrounding streets. Area is either Colorado College permit or paid parking. We can probably use parking in the Robson Arena lot after 6:00 p.m. Car pooling recommended.

Disabled Access: Yes. Wheelchair ramp at back of church. There are stairs to get to the basement part of the tour.
Bathrooms: Yes

Please note: 2024 Summer Tour Update

We are excited to announce the tours for the upcoming 2024 Summer Series! The HPA, in appreciation of our member’s support, is prioritizing reservations when attendance limitations apply. Reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis by signing up for your preferred tours below. This also means that members will be given a place before “guests” or non-members. If a member wishes to include a guest, that guest will be put on the wait list until and if a cancellation occurs and they are first on the wait list. We will email everyone who has a reservation before each tour to confirm that they still intend to attend. Cancellations will be handled on the website and through the link provided in your confirmation email.
